Q: Power magazine has been in print, and under the same ownership, since the late 1800's. Taking over a magazine with this kind of history must have been exciting and challenging. Looking back now, was there anything surprising that you hadn't expected?

A:  We had a long due-diligence period and therefore a pretty good handle on the property, so there weren't many surprises. We did have some operational challenges as we moved POWER from a large company to a small company, but the transition was surprisingly smooth. We carried over some of the vendors the former owner used and that helped.

Q: You implemented many changes to both the print and electronic products of Power magazine. But what change/addition has had the most reader impact?

A:  While there were numerous changes, three immediately stand out, and in this order: 1) POWER had been publishing 9 issues annually, we brought it back to twelve. 2) We took a twice monthly e-newsletter and brought it to weekly. 3) We increased our global coverage and global distribution that was previously heavily weighted toward the U.S. These three items provided more material for our readers, broadened our audience, and generated more interaction which helped us grow closer to the reader base.

Some marketers even thought direct mail would become obsolete. But they were wrong. Soon came the world of CAN-SPAM laws, Junk folders, bounce backs and the surfacing of consumers who had become Web savvy enough to create fake e-mail accounts. Marketers had to be smarter—and more importantly, more targeted—with their e-mail efforts.
